Tom Brady says the extra time between the conference title and the Super Bowl can be a blessing. He recalled to FS1’s The Herd how, before Super Bowl XLIX, he and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels used the Friday night just before the game to simplify their red-zone plan. After dinner with his family, Brady called McDaniels around 10 p.m. to rework red-zone plays — Brady was uneasy about the way the Seahawks’ defense reacted to his looks and felt too many moving parts were giving the defense an advantage.

With practice done for the week, Brady and McDaniels reviewed film and cut the playbook down to three or four clear red-zone options between 10 and 11 p.m. They ran those plays in a final walkthrough Saturday morning, and two of them resulted in touchdown passes in the game. One went to Brandon LaFell in the first quarter; the other Brady didn’t specify. Brady finished Super Bowl XLIX with 328 yards and four touchdowns, earning MVP honors.

Brady used the story to urge younger quarterbacks — including Drake Maye and Sam Darnold — not to overcomplicate Super Bowl prep. He argued that after putting in the work, the goal is to refine and focus: trim a bloated playbook to the handful of plays that give your team the best chance to win. McDaniels, who returned to New England as offensive coordinator and helped Maye become an MVP contender, will be beside Maye in his first Super Bowl.

Brady also reflected fondly on the two-week buildup with McDaniels as one of his best memories, questioning the value of carrying hundreds of calls on game day when only a fraction will be used. He noted former teammate Mike Vrabel’s likely underdog mentality as he coaches against Brady’s old team, and praised the Patriots’ season as deserving of their AFC berth.

Fan Take: This highlights how elite teams win not just through talent but by simplifying and trusting a clear game plan — a lesson every NFL coach and quarterback can apply. The trend toward tighter, situational gamebooks could shift how teams prepare for big games, favoring clarity and execution over volume.
