  • Jeremy Jacquet unlikely to play again this season
  • Liverpool will closely monitor his recovery

Jeremy Jacquet, who joined Liverpool in January, may play his last game at Stade Rennais after sustaining a serious shoulder injury in Saturday’s Ligue 1 match against RC Reims.

According to a report in L’Equipe, the 20-year-old defender is likely to require surgery, which could see his season end early in France and delay his arrival on Merseyside.

The injury occurred in the 69th minute of Rennes’ 3-1 loss to Reims.

Rennes coach Habib Bayet acknowledged the seriousness of the situation after the game, calling the injury “serious.”

While there was initial hope that a period of rest would be sufficient, reports suggest that surgery is the most realistic path to a full recovery.

If Jaquet undergoes surgery, he will be sidelined for several months, effectively ending his season with his boyhood club.

It was a stinging blow for the young Frenchman, who had expressed a deep desire to finish his time in the red and black on a high note before officially joining Liverpool on July 1.

Liverpool will closely monitor his recovery

Liverpool, who signed Jacquet for £60m on deadline day in the winter, will remain in constant contact with Rennes’ medical staff.

While this injury does not threaten the transfer itself, it does add further frustration to Arne Slott’s defensive scheme.

The Reds have already dealt with long-term injuries to Giovanni Leoni and Connor Bradley this season.

Anfield officials will aim to take a patient approach, prioritizing the centre-back’s long-term health rather than rushing him back.

The current aim is for Jaquet to be fully rehabilitated by the start of Liverpool’s 2026/27 pre-season in July.

Ibrahima Konate’s future remains uncertain and Virgil van Dijk will turn 35 this year, but regardless of the temporary setback, Jaquet will continue to play a key role as the mainstay of Liverpool’s future defence.
