Mike Sullivan Highlights Areas for Growth in Brennan Osman’s Game

What’s next for Brennan Osman? It appeared that Osman was beginning to find his footing at the NHL level. After performing well with the Hartford Wolf Pack in the American Hockey League, Osman was called up by the New York Rangers and participated in ten straight games.

The Rangers’ coach, Mike Sullivan, provided Osman with more playing opportunities, placing him on the third line and also involving him in the second power-play unit. However, during the team’s final game before the Olympic break, Osman was sidelined from the lineup. Initially, many believed this was due to rules related to his eligibility to return to Hartford during the Olympics, but Sullivan clarified that this was not the reason. He also pointed out that Osman’s performances hadn’t always met the team’s standards, emphasizing that there is room for improvement. Sullivan remarked that Osman needs to develop certain aspects of his game to solidify his place in the NHL.

This season, Osman has scored just one point in 16 NHL games, despite being given more responsibility. He has not yet been reassigned to the AHL, but it’s likely he will be sent down by the time the Rangers return to play on February 26th. Still, there’s optimism that Osman will get another shot in the NHL this season, especially as the Rangers are retooling their roster and anticipating more trades.

In related news, coach Mike Sullivan’s role might be crucial in shaping the U.S. men’s hockey team for the Olympics, highlighting his influence on the national stage. Despite the team’s focus on nurturing young talent, Osman still has to earn Sullivan’s trust, which is key to securing a permanent spot in the lineup. Osman acknowledged that he is still working on building that trust and learning the intricacies of his role.

Fan Take: Fans should be excited because Osman’s development could be a pivotal part of the Rangers’ future, and his growth might signal the emergence of new talent in the league.
