Liverpool are currently preparing to sign a £65m central midfielder ‘like a young Gerrard’, but there could be competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United…
Reds look to new midfielder after defeat at Molineux
The Reds’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League ended with a 2-1 loss to bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Tuesday night, leaving the Reds lamenting their failure to take chances.
Slott said: “Recently we have been winning more points because we have been scoring more from set pieces, but what has not changed in the last five, six, seven games is that we are struggling because it is very difficult to score from the open play chances that we create.
“From the amount of possession we have, it’s not as much as I would like, but it’s enough and much more than other teams.”
Slott’s side created four big chances throughout the match, three more than their opponents, but they were crushed by Kodi Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk, while Rio Ngmoha also narrowly missed a shot.
Mohamed Salah folding his duck is one of the only positives the Merseysiders can take from the loss, but they remain keen on signing a new forward this summer with Bayern Munich’s rising star.
Caught Offside reports that as well as strengthening their attack, Liverpool are also targeting a central midfielder, with FSG currently preparing a move for Juventus star Kefren Thuram.
Arsenal and Man United are also said to be interested in the Frenchman, but the Italian side clearly value him very highly and have set their asking price at up to €75m (about £65m).
Juventus insist the midfielder is a key part of their future plans, but he could be a great signing if the Reds can lure them into a sale…
He compared Thuram to Liverpool legend Gerrard.
During the former Nice man’s time in Ligue 1, Jermaine Pennant urged the Reds to sign him, saying: “I’d like to see Liverpool sign Kefren Thuram. He plays for Nice and is a box-to-box midfielder. I think he’s perfect. He’s very skilled and can tackle. Basically he’s like a young Gerrard.”
Since then, the 24-year-old has continued to establish himself as a key player for Juventus, making 35 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring two goals and providing four assists.
Liverpool submit inquiry to sign ‘incredible’ Barcelona and Real Madrid target of 38G/A in 2025-26
The Reds are interested in signing the Bayern Munich star.
The French international, who has four caps, is particularly adept at moving the ball forward, averaging 0.9 successful dribbles per 90 in Serie A this season, the third highest of any Juventus player.
Thuram has the ability to shine at Anfield and Liverpool clearly need to strengthen their squad this summer after a very disappointing run in defending their Premier League title.
