  • Guglielmo Vicario blames poor goalkeeping
  • Tottenham’s goalkeeper crisis continues

Jamie Redknapp has blamed Guglielmo Vicario for Tottenham’s first goal conceded against Liverpool in a high-stakes clash at Anfield.

The Italian goalkeeper, who returned to the starting lineup after being on the bench in midweek, was unable to stop Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick which upset Spurs.

Guglielmo Vicario blames poor goalkeeping

The goal came in the 18th minute when Szoboszlai, who is in sensational form for Arne Slott’s side, curled a shot into the left corner.

Despite having a clear view of the ball, Vicario’s footwork was slow and, although he managed to parry it, he could only push it into the net.

Speaking on Sky Sports (via BBC Sport) at half-time, Redknapp criticized the keeper’s technique. he said:

“We’ve seen some beautiful plays from Dominik Szoboszlai, against Arsenal and against Manchester City, but this was a goalkeeper’s mistake.

“Look at Vicario’s foot pattern. He’s about to trip. He can’t gain altitude, he can’t move properly. He puts a very big hand on it. He has to save it.”

Phil McNulty also criticized the Italian player, claiming that his mistake would have frustrated Igor Tudor incredibly.

He said (via BBC Sport): “Spurs and interim head coach Igor Tudor will be extremely unhappy about this after such a decent start.

“It was another mistake by the goalkeeper. Guglielmo Vicario was mispositioned and made a weak attempt to deny Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick. But he was not substituted.”

Tottenham’s goalkeeper crisis continues

The mistake compounds the dire goalkeeping situation for interim manager Igor Tudor.

Last Tuesday, Tudor made the shock decision to leave out Vicario and bring in 22-year-old Antonin Kinski for the Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.

The move backfired spectacularly as Kinski made two glaring mistakes and was sent off after just 17 minutes, leaving the young Czech keeper in tears.

Vicario has been severely out of form, making a series of high-profile errors during Tottenham’s current 11-game winless run.

Spurs sit just one point above the relegation zone, with the lack of a reliable presence between the posts being the biggest concern.

There are already reports that Vicario could be sold this summer, and his recent missteps at Anfield have only intensified the club’s desire for a permanent replacement.
