Tottenham Hotspur have reached a “verbal agreement” to sign Andy Robertson this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Tottenham reach agreement with Robertson, blow to Celtic

Tottenham could be in the relegation zone of the Premier League, but they appear to have an advantage over Celtic in the race to sign Robertson.

The Bhoys are one of a number of clubs keeping an eye on the Scotland captain as he prepares to leave Liverpool as a free agent in the coming months. However, according to recent reports, their hopes of signing a left-back are fading by the day.

Announcing his decision to leave Liverpool after nine successful years, Robertson said: “Leaving a club like Liverpool is never easy. It’s been a big part of my and my family’s life for the last nine years. But for me, the players move on and others move on. What remains the same is the club and obviously the fans.”

“I’ve had a great nine years here and I think it’s well documented, especially in the last year or so. I had the chance to leave but I didn’t take it because of how difficult it was to leave this club. And I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Celtic, on the other hand, will be back to square one unless Tottenham meet one condition. The Hoops were reported to be looking to sign Robertson last month, and he has made no secret of his admiration for the club over the years. Unfortunately, Tottenham are still in control.

Romano reports that Tottenham have reached a “verbal agreement” to sign Robertson on the condition that he avoids relegation this season.

The Lilywhites are currently two points clear of safety but have a chance to move out of the drop zone if they win against Sunderland on Sunday afternoon.

Even at 32, the £160,000-a-week star would be a great addition to North London. His experience will quickly prove invaluable to Roberto De Zerbi’s side after such a disastrous campaign. As the first contract goes, the Italian has no complaints.

The Scotland captain has found himself at the center of praise since joining Liverpool, with former Anfield star Jose Enrique describing him as “incredible”.
