  • Arne Slott wins Premier League in debut season
  • Andoni Iraola is front-runner to become Liverpool’s next manager

Liverpool have officially confirmed that Arne Slott has stepped down as head coach with immediate effect, bringing an unexpectedly short but eventful chapter to an end at Anfield.

Slott left Liverpool with a Premier League title on his resume, but after a disappointing subsequent campaign the club decided to move in a different direction.

Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League and following an end-of-season review, the leaders elected to begin a search for a new head coach.

Andoni Iraola is now the clear favorite to replace him, with Fabrizio Romano also reported to be a leading candidate for the former Bournemouth manager.

This was a big decision for Liverpool as Slott’s spell wasn’t a complete failure.

Arne Slott wins Premier League in debut season

Winning the Premier League in his first season under Jurgen Klopp was a huge achievement and many managers would have earned more minutes just for that.

But football moves fast, especially at a club like Liverpool. The 2025-26 season exposed too many problems.

Performances dipped, the team lost their intensity and the atmosphere at Anfield became even more tense.

Reports have pointed to supporters’ dissatisfaction with flat displays and poor results, while Liverpool’s style of play has also been questioned during the season.

The timing also makes sense from the club’s perspective. Liverpool are already heading for a major summer rebuild, with several experienced players leaving or expected to leave.

If the board decides Slott is no longer the right person, making the change now will give the next coach the opportunity to shape the transfer window appropriately.

Iraola would be an interesting addition. His Bournemouth side are known for their energy, pressing and brave football, fitting the identity that Liverpool supporters usually embrace.

He also has a past working relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, which could help with the transition.

It’s a cruel call from Liverpool, but it’s not shocking. Slott had won the league and deserved respect for that, but the club clearly felt the team was going in the wrong direction.

The big challenge now is to ensure that the next commitment is not just a reaction.

Iraola is a very smart choice, as his football has a sense of urgency and aggression that Liverpool fans would love to see again.

But being a Bournemouth manager and a Liverpool manager have completely different pressures.

Liverpool’s decision will only work if they properly support their next manager. They need a new identity, new leadership, and smart hiring. Closing the slot is only the first step.

The real test is what Liverpool do next.

Liverpool could solve their right-back problem in July due to the terms of his release clause.
