  • Virgil van Dijk to leave Liverpool
  • Van Dijk remains one of the best in Premier League history

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is expected to leave the club at the end of the 2026/27 season, marking the final end to one of the most transformative eras in Anfield’s history.

According to a reporter from The Athletic, the 34-year-old Dutchman has a full year left on his contract before an “expected parting” in the summer of 2027.

Van Dijk remains the undisputed starter under manager Arne Slott, but the club’s strategic focus on young defensive options suggests there are no plans to renew his contract at this time.

Virgil van Dijk to leave Liverpool

The news follows a series of high-profile departure announcements at the club, with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson also confirmed to be entering their final months on Merseyside. Pearce pointed out that Liverpool’s defensive situation was changing rapidly.

“Captain Virgil van Dijk has one year left on his contract before his expected farewell,” Pearce reported.

Liverpool are already leading the race to sign Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth as a long-term left-footed successor, according to reports.

Van Dijk is set to turn 35 by the time his contract expires and appears ready to leave as a free agent.

When Van Dijk ultimately leaves in 2027, he will likely do so as the greatest centre-back to ever wear a Liverpool shirt.

Since joining from Southampton for a then-world record £75m in 2018, he has been a pillar of Liverpool’s recent success.

Van Dijk’s influence on the club’s identity cannot be overstated. He instantly turned a weak defense into the foundation of a dominant team that won every major trophy.

The atmosphere at the club is currently low following recent departures in Europe and domestically, but Van Dijk’s determination to see his end of the deal ensures that Anfield fans will have one final year to celebrate a true club legend.
