Jamie O’Hara says De Zerbi is completely wrong about Tottenham player’s £42m fee

  • Romero faced harsh criticism after Sunderland defeat
        • Alasdair Gold says he feels ‘sorry’ for Tottenham star after De Zerbi’s actions

Jamie O’Hara suggests Roberto De Zerbi is wrong about Cristian Romero, with the captain having let Tottenham Hotspur down numerous times this season.

Romero will play no role in Tottenham’s survival

Romero was dealt another blow in his first game in charge, with Mohamed Kudus sent off injured shortly after De Zerbi’s arrival, and his collision with Antonin Kinski against Sunderland will keep him out for the rest of the season and likely the World Cup.

The Italian’s main goal is to keep Spurs in the Premier League, and he insisted the Argentine is key to that. “I think Kuti is extremely important for us and for Tottenham as a club. He is our captain and probably the most important player in our team. We need the best player in Romero to achieve our goals.”

But O’Hara clearly doesn’t buy into that idea. The former midfielder recently suggested that Kevin Danso might be a better option for De Zerbi in the remaining six Premier League games, given that Romero, who paid £42m for the Lilywhites, is simply unreliable.

The former Spurs man said: “Romero has been a pain in the ass this season. He really is, and I love Romero and I think he’s a really good player. If you put him in an Atletico Madrid team, you have a world-class centre-half. In the Tottenham team, he’s a thorn in his side. He’s a thorn in his side and I think Danso is actually a slightly safer bet right now.”

Romero faced harsh criticism after Sunderland defeat

With Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light putting two points on the line, it is perhaps unsurprising that the club’s captain has come under fire from the media.

Former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood warned 27-year-old De Zerbi could not be trusted following the defeat in the North East, while Simon Jordan hit out at the centre-back’s comments in the media.

Henry Winter also criticized the number of yellow and red cards given to Argentina players, saying: “He’s 27 years old, but he’s too often undisciplined. Romero, Romero, where are you, Romero? He’ll be in the stands. He’s been suspended for six games this season after being sent off twice (plus 12 yellows). That’s not a leader. That’s not a captain who properly represents a famous club.”

Romero is set to miss the final six games of the season, and it’s time for Danso to stand up and be counted.
