Manchester United are in contention to sign Ao Tanaka from Leeds United this summer, but Michael Carrick has been impressed with the midfielder’s performances at Old Trafford.
Tanaka insists on leaving Leeds
Man United had the chance to see Tanaka’s qualities first-hand last Monday as the midfielder played a more than adequate role as Leeds won for the first time in 45 years at Old Trafford.
It was also a reminder that Los Blancos need his quality, just a week after he scored the decisive goal in the FA Cup semi-final against West Ham United.
However, it may have been too late to realize that Tanaka is a player who can perform every week in the Premier League, and there are now reports that Tanaka will push for his departure from the club.
A new contract at Elland Road has not yet been ruled out, but it remains to be seen whether Tanaka is willing to accept his current playing time.
Daniel Farke certainly hopes so, telling reporters recently: “This is his first season at the highest level and it took time to adapt to this level and be consistent.
Manchester United hope to close deal quickly for midfielder with just £9m difference
The Red Devils are one of three times trying to bring the price down.
“There was a lot of criticism at times, but if we can perform like we did on Monday, it will be good. Ao is a very important player for us.”
Unfortunately, the ball appears to be in the midfielder’s court, but he could still pull off the ultimate betrayal by leaving Elland Road for Man United this summer.
Manchester United issue emergency alert over Tanaka race
According to Team Talk, Man United are currently on high alert in the race to sign Tanaka, which could be one of the most surprising moves of the summer considering the rivalry between the two clubs.
Carrick, who is worth £15m, was reportedly impressed with the Japan international on Monday and wants to include him in his midfield squad.
Man United’s midfield problems are well documented. Strengthening in that area is a clear priority for INEOS this summer, with names such as Sandro Tonali and Elliott Anderson emerging as top targets on that front.
But even if that fails, Tanaka could provide the Red Devils with an unexpected gem.

It was a perfect performance from the 27-year-old last Monday and should be enough for Leeds to rush ahead with contract talks.
As it stands, Tanaka’s current contract expires in 2028. On paper, the Whites should have plenty of time to finalize a deal, but there could be further interest from Man United as the midfielder considers his future.
