World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz and No. 4 Novak Djokovic both missed the Madrid Open due to lingering injuries.

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz will also miss this week’s Barcelona Open and will miss the tournament in the Spanish capital with a wrist injury.

“Madrid is home and one of the most special places in my calendar. That’s why it hurts so much not to be able to play here for the second year in a row,” Alcaraz wrote on social media. “This is a very special tournament for me and not being able to stand in front of my fans is especially painful. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you again soon.”

Djokovic has not played a match since the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. He missed the Miami Open and the Monte Carlo Masters due to a right shoulder injury.

“Madrid, unfortunately I will not be competing in this year’s Madrid Open,” he wrote on his social media account on Friday. “I’m continuing my recovery so that I can come back soon. Hurry up!”

Djokovic has won in Madrid three times.

The Associated Press and PA contributed to this report.
