  • A sad end to a brilliant Liverpool career

Mohamed Salah may be playing his last game for the club. The worst fears of the Anfield faithful after he limped off against Crystal Palace in midweek appear to have been confirmed by international sources, suggesting the Egyptian King’s storied tenure on Merseyside may be coming to a premature and sad conclusion.

Egypt assistant coach Ibrahim Hassan said medical tests at the national team camp revealed that Salah had sustained a serious hamstring injury.

The injury is expected to keep the forward sidelined for at least four weeks, effectively ending his participation in the Premier League for the remainder of the season.

Hassan was candid about the seriousness of the problem, telling Reuters (quoted via Al Jazeera): “I have injured my hamstring and it will require four weeks of treatment.”

Steven Gerrard talks about Mohamed Salah’s injury

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard spoke on TNT Sport (via Mirror) and expressed grave concern over the news.

The former captain, who himself has experienced the physical toll of high-stakes football, suggested Salah’s optimism may be misplaced given the nature of his hamstring problem at this stage of the season.

Gerrard stressed that without a proper farewell it would be a tragedy for both players and supporters.

“It would be sad, but I hope not (that he played his last game).

“His current condition is probably worse than Mo thinks, but we won’t know the true extent until he is properly evaluated by the medical team and an MRI scan is performed.”

“It would be very sad if he played his last game, not just for Mo but for everyone associated with Liverpool Football Club, because he is a legend and everyone would like to see him get the sending off he deserves.”

A sad end to a brilliant Liverpool career

Salah is due to leave the club when his contract expires this summer, and his four-week layoff means he will not have another chance to wear a red shirt.

Since joining from Roma in 2017, Salah has broken almost all of the club’s goalscoring records and led the club to Premier League and Champions League glory.

If the 3-1 win against Palace was indeed his curtain call, it would mark a quiet end for a player who has provided so many raucous and iconic moments.

While the medical team at the AXA training center are working around the clock to find a miracle, the reality is emerging that Liverpool may have to survive the end of the season and the future without their biggest icon of the modern era.
