Since taking over as interim manager, Carrick has completely turned the ship around, leading the Red Devils to third place in the Premier League and firmly on the brink of Champions League qualification.
Big changes are on the horizon at Old Trafford as the summer transfer window approaches.
Club legend Casemiro is officially packing his bags as his contract expires at the end of the season. United are reportedly looking for two new midfielders to fill the gaping hole the 34-year-old Brazilian leaves after scoring eight goals this season.
But while the rebuilding of the midfield has grabbed the headlines, the situation in central defense has sparked an entirely different conversation.
Michael Carrick remains calm about defensive options
Carrick is incredibly unfazed by Man United’s defense. When asked about the market for centre-backs, the head coach bluntly stated that the center of defense is “not an area of concern” at the moment.
“That’s not a concern for me at this point.” As reported by Sky Sports, Carrick said of United’s centre-back:
“I think it’s difficult at this point and the timing to talk about what lies ahead in the summer and beyond, to elaborate on that.
“Richa (Martinez) is actually out of the game for other reasons at the moment, but I won’t go into that, but I understand why you ask that.
“But no, I’m not worried. I think we have a mix of experience, real quality and young players who are more than just really talented (players).
“Two promising young players (Heaven and Yoro) have already shown what they are capable of. I thought Aiden was great last week in such a difficult match.
“As I sit here, I don’t have any worries. Of course, I don’t really know what the future holds, so I can’t get too involved.”
Man United have been struggling defensively lately.
Carrick’s calm demeanor is actually pretty wild, given the recent turmoil in United’s backline.
The team was completely devastated by injuries and suspensions. Matthijs de Ligt has recently returned to light training on grass after being sidelined with persistent back problems since late November, but Carrick admitted there is no pressure to rush his return before the end of the season.
Meanwhile, Lisandro Martinez remains suspended after receiving a red card against Leeds, making it a frustratingly disorganized year for the Argentine.
The immediate defensive crisis appears to be easing, with Harry Maguire finally returning from suspension in time for Monday night’s game against Brentford, and Lenny Yolo also close to returning to the pitch.
At the end of the day, Carrick trusts the process. He openly praised the team’s blend of established experience and ultra-talented youngsters, noting in particular that promising teenagers like Heaven and Yoro have already proven themselves fit for the big stage.
