MADRID – Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine defeated Mira Andreva of Russia 7-5, 6-3 to win the Madrid Open on Saturday.
The players, whose countries have been at war since the Russian invasion in 2022, did not shake hands at the net after the match or pose together at the awards ceremony.
Kostyuk, ranked 23rd in the world, fell to the clay court and covered his face with his hands as Andreeva’s final shot went wide after converting match point. She stood up and performed a backflip as the crowd cheered. Meanwhile, Andreva collapsed into a courtside seat, covered herself with a towel, and cried.
Kostyuk concluded his victory speech with the words, “Glory to God and glory to Ukraine.”
The win was Kostyuk’s third WTA title, but his second at the tournament, following last weekend’s win in Rouen.
Eighth-ranked Andreeva, who turned 19 on Wednesday, congratulated Koystuk to the audience after being presented with the runner-up trophy.
“I would like to congratulate Marta and her team for today’s victory and her season,” Andreeva said, as Kostyuk applauded. “Congratulations on winning the tournament for the second time in a row.”
Kostyuk defeated No. 5 Jessica Pegula and No. 13 Linda Noskova on her way to the final, her first win in a WTA 1000 tournament.
Facing Andreeva, who was playing in her third WTA 1000 final, Kostyuk converted all four break chances and saved four of her opponent’s six break chances.
“It feels incredible to have her stand up now,” Kostyuk said. “Until last year, we had 2 wins and 7 losses in Madrid, but I never thought we would win the title here. It was certainly not my favorite tournament, but thanks to the crowd for supporting us.”
In Sunday’s men’s final, top-ranked Jannik Sinner will face No. 3 Alexander Zverev.
