Sunday’s defeat to Celtic has some members of the Rangers board questioning Danny Rolle’s future at the club, with five key concerns.

Rangers board divided over Roll’s future

In theory, firing Roll at this stage would seem incredibly harsh. The German is yet to even have a full season in charge at Ibrox and inherits a team still reeling from Russell Martin’s tenure as manager. However, on the pitch, it is expected to be a silverware-less season for the Gers, which is not up to their high standards.

Defeats at Hearts were a blow last season, but none will be more excruciating than Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Celtic in the Old Firm derby.

It seems like the 49ers have a lot to reflect on. According to TeamTalk, the Rangers board has five main points to analyze regarding Rohr’s future, raising questions, including a “section” of the board backing the German player.

Those doubting his managerial skills are reportedly concerned about recent performances, the team’s growth under Rohr, lack of progress in Europe, his style of football and the recruitment of personnel to match it.

Some concerns are valid. Rangers’ recruiting situation hasn’t necessarily improved since the manager took over, although it was only a small sample in January. In summary, talented loanee Andreas Skov Olsen is unlikely to join on a permanent contract, despite arriving with high expectations.

But whether the remaining concerns are serious enough to cost Rohr his job at this stage is still up for debate, and the 49ers are pondering a big decision.

Rangers should continue using Roll regardless of the outcome.

It was always naive to think Rohr could take over the wreckage left behind by Martin and build a team capable of winning titles. The former Sheffield Wednesday manager deserves praise for turning the title picture into a three-horse race, even if it doesn’t result in a silver medal for those at Ibrox.

Had he enjoyed a full season, the outcome could have been much different. As it stands, the 49ers will have to stick with the team next season and wait for results.

Recruitment-related issues can be resolved by all parties involved, not just managers. And as that improves, the style of play could also improve along with potential European advancements.

After recent performances, Coach Rohr called for more resilience from his players. There were signs of its resilience throughout the campaign, but it did not fully strengthen overnight.

While some Rangers executives have concerns, staying put is their best option this summer.
