  • Michael Carrick impresses at Man United
  • The Red Devils have struggled with past appointments.

Michael Carrick’s future at Manchester United has been decided, with the former midfielder signing a new contract to keep him in charge at Old Trafford.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the contract has been signed and completed and Carrick will remain at the club until June 2028, with an option to extend for a further year until 2029.

This is a big moment for United. Carrick had been working as caretaker manager, but after leading the team to a strong finish and securing third place in the Premier League, the club decided he had earned the chance to lead the next phase properly.

According to Reuters, after United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, Carrick played down speculation but said there would be more clarity in the coming days.

This is not just a contract extension. It feels like Man U has finally decided on a direction.

Carrick stepped in at a difficult time and was able to restore calm to the team.

Under him United looked more organised, more confident and more cohesive.

Finishing third and returning to the Champions League is a huge achievement, especially given how uncertain the season was before he took over.

There’s also something symbolic about Carrick getting this opportunity. Although he knows Man United intimately, this does not seem like a purely emotional appointment.

He has certainly been a great player for the club and the fans understand his connection to Old Trafford. But the bigger reason this makes sense is because he showed he can actually coach, manage pressure and get results.

The Red Devils have struggled with past appointments.

United have tried different routes since Sir Alex Ferguson left. They’ve been looking for experienced managers, big names, tactical projects, and short-term solutions.

Some worked for a while, but none created lasting stability. Carrick’s appointment feels different because it’s quiet.

It’s not about saying it out loud. It’s about building something that actually lasts.

The length of the contract is also important. A contract until 2028 with an option for 2029 gives Carrick enough security to plan beyond one transfer window.

Rather than simply reacting to pressure, he can build a team, develop young players and push for a contract that suits his football. This appointment makes sense if United support him properly.

Carrick has taken his chance, but now the club must give him the tools to build a serious team. The hard work begins now.
