Tom Heaton is expected to remain at Manchester United for another season, with the veteran goalkeeper reportedly close to signing a new one-year deal.
The 40-year-old’s current contract expires this summer, but United are prepared to keep him for a sixth successive season at Old Trafford.
According to the Daily Mirror, the new agreement will extend his stay until 2027.
At first glance, this may seem like a strange decision. Heaton has barely played for United in recent years, his last senior appearance for the club coming in the League Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest back in 2023.
But if you look deeper, you’ll see that there’s a clear logic behind it.

United are not holding on to Heaton as they hope he will suddenly become their first-choice goalkeeper.
That’s clearly not the plan. His values are different. He is experienced, respected, understands the club and is considered an important figure in the dressing room and on the training ground.
It’s more important than people think. Successful teams need players who set the standard, even if they don’t start every week.
Heaton has been in the Premier League for a number of years and has also played for England, so he knows how a top-level dressing room should operate.
It would be really beneficial for young goalkeepers and academy players to have someone like him around.
Casemiro spoke about Heaton’s importance to United:
“He’s very important to us. He’s been very important to us because he has pushed the training.”
There are also practical reasons for team registration. United finished third under manager Michael Carrick and are set to return to the Champions League, with UEFA’s own rules making Heaton particularly valuable.
The goalkeeper will add value to the United team
He came through United’s system early in his career and could help the club meet their raw player requirements.
It may not sound interesting, but it’s exactly the little details that matter when clubs are building their European squads.
United’s goalkeeping department could also be subject to changes this summer. According to reports, Andre Onana and Altay Bayndil could both leave the club, while the future of young goalkeeper Radek Vitek is still being evaluated.
In that context, keeping Heaton provides some stability for the club while bigger decisions are made.
He may not play as much, but his presence will help maintain standards, guide the younger players and give Carrick a new, credible voice within the team.
