One of Anfield’s greatest love stories came to an end on Sunday when Mohamed Salah was substituted in what is expected to be his final appearance at the iconic stadium.
The Egyptian King, Liverpool’s most successful modern-day central figure, was greeted with a moving standing ovation from every corner of Anfield as he made his way to the touchline.
When the fourth official held up Salah’s number, the whole stadium stood up. It was a moment when chants of his name echoed around the ground, bringing tears to the eyes of players, staff and supporters.
Salah visibly seized the moment, putting his hands on his chest and taking a long, emotional look back at the pitch he has called home since 2017.
Salah leaves Liverpool and Premier League legend
True to his nature, Salah did not leave quietly. Before being substituted, the winger produced a moment of pure brilliance, contributing to Liverpool’s lead with a stunning assist to Curtis Jones, taking him one step further than Steven Gerrard’s club assist record.
It was a much-needed reminder of the extraordinary talent Liverpool are bidding farewell to.
Salah scored over 230 goals in eight seasons at the club, winning two Premier League titles, one Champions League and countless other personal records.
He finished the season with 12 goals and 10 assists across all competitions, taking his total for Liverpool to 257 goals and 123 assists.
He leaves not only as Liverpool’s best marksman of the modern era, but also as one of the greatest players to ever grace the Premier League.
