  • West Ham could land £70m for Matheus Fernandes
  • West Ham should benefit considerably from signing Fernandes.

West Ham United could earn up to £70m by selling Matheus Fernandes to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, according to a transfer source.

Following the Irons’ relegation from the Premier League, several high-profile players are set to leave the London Stadium, with the names of Jarrod Bowen and Crisencio Somerville now posted on the exit door.

The Portuguese midfielder is also one of the players who could be sold for a significant sum, with Manchester United reportedly interested in the 21-year-old, although Michael Carrick’s side could face stiff competition from the continent.

West Ham could land £70m for Matheus Fernandes

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness expects Fernandes to bring West Ham a sizeable transfer fee in the summer, hinting that it may not be long before PSG lure Fernandes away from the capital.

He said on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast: “If it goes to auction it could fetch up to £70 million, so I think that’s where the market will be.

“PSG will be very attractive to Fernandes, but there is also a good chance he will remain in the Premier League, it’s just a matter of who steps up and pays that amount.

“We are currently talking behind the scenes and we hope that an agreement can be reached (with PSG) as it will be announced soon on the window.”

West Ham should benefit considerably from signing Fernandes.

West Ham’s continued faith in Nuno Espirito Santo provides welcome stability as they prepare for life in the Championship, but it still looks likely that some of their most valuable players will leave during the summer.

Fernandes is one of them, with the Irons manager hailing the youngster’s “fantastic season” despite his team being relegated from the Premier League, and the fact that he was called up to Portugal’s squad in the spring to build on his midfield efforts is a testament to the 21-year-old’s talent.

The east Londoners paid just over £40m to sign him from Southampton last August, but with the youngster’s stock having brightened up even more since then, they should be confident of making a big return for him if he were to leave this summer.

West Ham already appear to be preparing for the Portuguese treasure’s departure, with reports saying they are in “agreement in principle” for midfielder Alfa Toure, who could be snapped up for just £6m.

Fernandes will be missed if he moves (as he likely will), but the London Stadium bosses should be able to command a big fee for him if PSG’s temptations prove too difficult to resist.
