Tottenham Hotspur’s decline is not due to lack of funds. The Londoners have spent recent years developing a variety of players, but that hasn’t stopped them from sinking to rock bottom in the Premier League.
What is critically lacking in the Hotspur Way is a clear, unified focus, and that needs to change. Vinay Venkatesham and Johan Lange sank this great club into an “embarrassing” relegation battle, barely surviving in the final game of the season.
The shocking number of injuries has done little to help, but while Spurs are in a tough spot, they are spoiling the cards in front of them and the result could have been disastrous.

It is clear that the club needs more talent in attack, having felt the absence of Son Heung-min over the past year.
Spurs plan to make offer to new son
Son, like Harry Kane before him, was an invaluable part of Tottenham’s attack. However, Tottenham failed to make good use of the cards, with Mohamed Kudus unable to pose an immediate goal threat before dying from a season-ending injury in January.
That’s not all. Randall Kolo Muani’s loan spell was a disaster and Wilson Odbert was sidelined for an extended period with an ACL injury. Brennan Johnson was sold to Crystal Palace in January.
These are the many variables that conspired against the Lilywhites this season and ENIC Group cannot afford to make that mistake again this summer.
According to Voetbal International, Tottenham have shown concrete interest in relegated West Ham United star Crisencio Somerville and are ready to make a new offer after falling through last year.
AS Roma also had a great season in Serie A, qualifying for the Champions League and firmly in contention for the championship. Given that the Dutch star could be available for just £26m, Spurs need to do everything they can to add significant dimension to their frontline.
West Ham may be reluctant to make a deal with their rivals, but they need money after dropping out of the Championship and Somerville has shown over the past year that he has the potential to flourish following a move to London.
Why Somerville could be the new Spurs son
Somerville is one of the Premier League’s most talented wingers, but it’s fair to say he hasn’t always been at the highest level for the club.
He proved he had top-class potential a few years ago with Leeds United in the Championship, and now Tottenham could help Son realize that by replacing him with a winger who pundit Gianfranco Zola described as “unpredictable” in the danger zone.
He may have Somerville’s speed and athleticism rather than Son. And while they have scored just five goals in the Premier League this year, they have also missed only seven big chances, underscoring the clinical edge they could develop under De Zerbi’s leadership.
What’s more, the Dutchman has finally come into his own, emerging as West Ham’s most impressive attacking force throughout the final week of the season. If he can maintain that level at Tottenham, supporters will benefit.
Although Somerville could not save West Ham from relegation, there is no doubt that his quality and talent made a difference. Without him, the Hammers would not have been able to endure as much as they did.
Spurs need a player like that on the left wing, someone who is still young but can stand out as the focal point of their attack. Somerville knows adversity and may just have the greed to start hitting the high beats. His pace and potential on the left side could lead Spurs to a comeback, and he can also shift into the center if needed.
Somerville is one of the highest-earning members of Nuno Espirito Santo’s side and will leave the London Stadium this summer. Whether he chooses to follow Kudus remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that he has the potential to emerge as Tottenham’s best winger since Son.
