Arsenal are being sued by former kit manager Mark Bonnick for unfair dismissal.
The Guardian reports that Bonnick, a lifelong supporter of the North London team who has served him for more than 20 years, has filed an employment tribunal claim for unfair dismissal and discrimination, alleging the club did not assess his case fairly and bowed to external reputational pressure.

Mark Bonnick sues Arsenal for unfair dismissal
The legal battle represents a dramatic rift between Arsenal and its dedicated and long-serving staff.
For 22 years, Bonnick worked within the club’s academy structure, ensuring behind-the-scenes operational standards were met every day.
However, his term came to an abrupt and controversial end when he was handed a notice of termination.
With support from the European Legal Support Center (ELSC), Bonnick has launched a comprehensive legal claim against the Gunners.
His legal representatives claim the club failed in its duty of care to protect veteran employees from online targeting, choosing to force through what they say amounts to political censorship and discrimination based on his beliefs.
What on earth happened?
The dispute dates back to a series of social media posts made by Mr. Bonnick regarding X, in which he expressed strong political views, criticism of Israel, and solidarity with the Palestinians.
Following intense online backlash and allegations of a coordinated campaign by pro-Israel social media accounts, Arsenal bosses intervened, first suspending the veteran kitman before formally sacking him.
Significantly, internal documents later obtained through a data access request revealed that the FA had clearly investigated Bonnick’s social media activity prior to his dismissal, and had formally emailed Arsenal that his posts did not breach any governing body’s rules.
Furthermore, during a subsequent internal appeal, Arsenal’s disciplinary committee admitted that it did not find his comments to be anti-Semitic.
Despite this recognition, the club chose to uphold his dismissal, justifying the decision on the basis that the media coverage would bring Arsenal into “disrepute”.
For Bonnick, who was ousted so close to retiring, this stance represents a serious double standard, and an ongoing legal challenge aims to secure a public apology, financial damages and a review of how the football club handles political expression by its staff.
Arsenal have also been accused of sending off Mesut Ozil over his political views
For many critics and football fans, Bonnick’s legal battle highlights a familiar pattern at Emirates Stadium.
The incident immediately sparked unpleasant comparisons with Arsenal’s treatment of former superstar playmaker Mesut Ozil, whose career at the Gunners took a nosedive after he expressed his political views online.
Back in December 2019, Ozil used his social media platforms to condemn China’s alleged persecution of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang.
Fearing a devastating economic and commercial backlash in the lucrative Chinese market, the north London club acted quickly, with state broadcaster CCTV even pulling an Arsenal game from its schedule in retaliation.
Arsenal released a highly publicized statement on Chinese social media platform Weibo, saying they were actively distancing themselves from their own players and that the club “always adheres to the principle of non-involvement in politics”.
After this incident, the World Cup winner was completely frozen out as an integral central figure in the team and was eventually completely dropped from both the Premier League and Europa League squads before his contract ended.
At last month’s Leadership Summit in Turbulent Times, Ozil revealed how his former club forced him to leave the club.
he said:
“I heard about the Uighur Turks and did some research. Of course, as a star, I had a voice. And I knew that if I posted about this kind of thing, I would get in trouble. But I didn’t care. I posted it. I’m happy.”
“So, of course, they closed the door on me. They didn’t let me play anymore. I understand my teammates too. So if they contact me, they’re going to be in trouble. If they contact me, they’re going to be in trouble, too.”
“They also have to take care of their own families, so this was my decision to react to my actions. Of course, there were some difficult times because I enjoyed playing football. They just took football away from me.”
Critics argue that Ozil’s precedent and Bonnick’s ongoing case both demonstrate the club’s history of prioritizing commercial safety and public relations over protecting the free speech rights of its staff.
