  • Manchester United have genuine interest in Fernandes
  • Fernandes can revitalize United’s midfield

Manchester United’s interest in Matheus Fernandes is not new, but the battle for him is likely to get even more complicated.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs interested in signing the West Ham midfielder, with Manchester United and Arsenal also considering a move.

This should be a warning for United. If they really want him, they can’t afford to move slowly.

Fernandes has been linked with Man United for months and it’s easy to see why.

The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder fits the profile of the player United are targeting: young, energetic, tested in the Premier League and with room for improvement.

Manchester United have genuine interest in Fernandes

United have even reportedly held talks with the player’s side in recent weeks, while West Ham’s relegation has made his future one of the most interesting topics of the summer.

His stats in the 2025/26 Premier League season were impressive for a midfielder in a struggling team.

FotMob has Fernandes scoring three goals, four assists, playing 3,024 minutes and averaging a rating of 7.24 for West Ham.

From Manchester United’s point of view, Fernandes could be very useful.

United are already looking to strengthen their midfield, with reports suggesting a move for Ederson from Atalanta is in the works, but Fernandes would bring a different type of quality.

He is more technical, more creative between the lines and used to carrying the ball forward.

Fernandes can revitalize United’s midfield

Michael Carrick’s system would make United less predictable and could give extra support to Bruno Fernandes.

The problem is the price. West Ham are reported to be worth around £80m for Matheus Fernandes, which is far more than United think he is worth.

PSG’s interest will only make things more difficult. The entry of the French champions usually increases financial pressure.

United should press for Fernandes, but not at all costs. He’s a talented, modern, very Carrick-style midfielder, but £80 million is a big gamble.
