‘It was a lot of fun’: Windham Clark has no regrets after getting booed for USA jersey stunt at $9.8 million event

In Canada, the land of hockey, wearing a jersey is never a bad idea. In fact, TPC Toronto’s rinks are also known for showing off golf fans’ favorite pastime. I mean, it couldn’t have been the worst idea when Windham Clark did it, right? But he chose to play the villain.

Clark wore a Team USA jersey at the Winter Olympics to rub salt in the Canadians’ wounds, and the results were as expected. But as exciting as what happened on the par-3 14th Saturday was exciting enough, the thriller was winning the jersey first.

“I definitely expected boos. It was a lot of fun,” Clark said after the round. “Even right before I made the putt, they kept booing me. I was actually really nervous on that putt because it would be really bad if I missed the putt.” Standing on the rink Thursday, Clark simply knew what the best outfit was for him. Only, he just didn’t have it. So he went online to try and get something on time, but to no avail. A surprise was in store for Round 2.

“Yesterday, I saw a guy in one of the holes wearing a Jack Hughes USA jersey. So I finished and walked straight up to him and said, ‘Is there any way I could buy your jersey and wear it tomorrow?’ And he was like, ‘Sure.'”

After having fun with the crowd, Clark promised to send the jersey back. He certainly did.

In the third round, Clark chose to wear a USA Hockey jersey with Jack Hughes’ name and number on it, number 86. He walked through a gallery of booing fans on the 14th, took off his jersey, made a birdie, and put it back on as he walked to the hole. He effortlessly slotted the ball in and raised his hands in celebration as fans continued to show their displeasure.

“I was actually really nervous about that putt because if I missed that putt it would have been really bad, so I’m glad I made birdie,” he said. “We were doing it to celebrate America’s wins more. We didn’t have anything against Canada, but we just thought it would be kind of fun in hockey country.”

He made his intentions clear, but his optics were not adjusted. After all, Canadians are well aware of what Hughes did to them just a few months ago.

On February 22, 2026, Hughes scored just 1 minute, 41 seconds into overtime at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games, leading Team USA to a 2-1 victory over Canada and winning the gold medal. This was the first men’s hockey gold medal for the United States since Miracle on Ice 46 years ago in Lake Placid. Hughes did just that, losing his two front teeth in the third period, but was taken down by a high stick. It’s safe to say Canada still remembers that, so when Clark wore that jersey, it never seemed like it was just for style points or entertainment. However, some people laughed.

“I think some guy came up and said, ‘You picked up a rock, that was pretty impressive,'” Clark laughed.

The competition will conclude in the $9.8 million event by Sunday, but the link moments have already been delivered. Encouraged by the boos, Clark is tied for third place and has a good chance of sweeping the title.
