LONDON — Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Lorenzo Musetti has missed the next grass-court Grand Slam as he continues to recover from a left thigh injury.
Musetti’s absence leaves an opening for fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini, a 2021 Wimbledon finalist and French Open quarterfinalist, who will play in the quarterfinals of the French Open.
Musetti missed the French Open due to an injury sustained during the Italian Open in May.
Musetti, ranked 15th in the world, said on Instagram on Wednesday: “My rehabilitation is progressing very well and the medical results are encouraging. Unfortunately, I have not yet begun a full-scale athletic training program and after careful consideration I have come to the difficult conclusion that I will not be able to compete at Wimbledon this year.”
“It’s not an easy decision, but it’s the right one. My priority is to get back on the court at 100%.”
Musetti reached the semi-finals at the All England Club in 2024, but lost to Novak Djokovic.
Berrettini is ranked 49th but was outside the top 100 when the Wimbledon entry list was drawn up.
Wimbledon starts on June 29th.
