England may have started the World Cup with an impressive 4-2 win over Croatia, but not everyone is convinced Thomas Tuchel’s side have the whole package they need to go all the way.

Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney has raised serious doubts about England’s chances of winning the tournament with Jordan Pickford as their first-choice goalkeeper.

As reported by the Mirror, Deeney suggested on CBS Sports that Pickford’s style creates too much uncertainty in pressure moments.

Pickford has long been England’s trusted No. 1 and has performed well in major tournaments.

However, his detractors claim that he can be emotional, reactive and at times seem confused, which is even more pronounced in knockout football.

Deanie didn’t shy away from criticism.

Asked on CBS Sports if he felt Pickford was too chaotic, Deeney said: “I don’t think so.

“To say the least, yeah, I don’t really understand statistics or anything like that, I’m just saying what my eyes tell me.

“I still think he should have saved the first goal (Croatia’s goal), that’s my opinion.” I think if you get your hands on it, you need to get your hands on it and keep it at bay.

“I feel like that when I watch Jordan… 50-yard shots trickle down to him and he’s yelling at everyone, ‘Do your job! Don’t let the shot go in!’

“Every time he ignores someone or fouls someone or does something, he’s like, ‘Don’t look at me!’

“We’re aiming to win the World Cup. That’s why we’re here. In my opinion, with all due respect, Jordan, because you know I like you. You can’t win when that guy gets in the goal. He doesn’t give you any confidence.”

Discussions that Tuchel cannot ignore

The comments seem harsh, but they tap into wider questions about England’s tournament mentality.

Pickford has the experience, leadership and loyalty from his manager, but England are chasing football’s biggest prize. The details matter.

Tuchel is unlikely to change goalkeepers anytime soon. But this debate will grow even louder if England concede even more sweet goals.
