A year ago, Tottenham Hotspur signed Mohamed Kudus for a fee of £55 million. This was one of the few big-ticket trades the Spurs were able to make over the line.
However, in a classic example of how the campaign unfolded, the exciting attacker spent most of his debut year on the treatment table.
They had injuries last season. Kudus was also a long-term absentee, along with Dejan Krsveski and James Madison.
It’s rather surprising to lose so much creativity. Is it any wonder that Lilywhite was at the bottom of the standings?
But even with those injuries, they should never have been there.
Kudus is currently absent from the World Cup with Ghana, but is expected to be ready and ready to start on the first day of the 2026/27 season. He could be joined by another exciting winger in the starting XI.
Spurs step up plans to sign new winger
Much of the chatter over the past week has revolved around the midfielder joining Tottenham.
Spurs are chasing two big signings in West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali. A move for Tonali is thought to be on the cards, with the player reportedly already agreeing a £275,000-a-week deal to move to north London.
Still, let’s not forget about Roberto De Zerbi and others on the side. In that regard, they are considering another raid on West Ham to land Crisencio Somerville, with an ambitious move for Marcus Rashford also being considered. Manchester City’s Sabinho is also a major target and negotiations are ongoing.
Negotiations with Liverpool’s Codi Gakpo are also progressing. That’s what TEAMtalk reports this week, which gave an update on the Dutchman’s future at Anfield.

Reporter Graham Bailey has pointed out that Spurs are considering whether to sign him instead of Sabinho, and that there are already talks between the clubs over a move for the Dutch international.
Gakpo has been discussed at length by De Zerbi and the club’s recruitment team and is said to be a player of strong interest.
Tottenham are in talks with Liverpool in a bid to get clarity on the winger’s future. The emergence of teenager Rio Ngmoha highlights his concerns over his long-term position on Merseyside.
Previous reports outlined that Spurs could be prepared to pay around £73m to secure his contract.
How to compare Kodi Gakpo and Mohammed Qudus
It was very unfortunate that Kudus missed most of the second half of the season due to injury. He started his life at Tottenham in one way or another.
Three goals and six assists in 26 games are not surprising, but the Ghanaian winger was far more exciting than those numbers suggest.
What the former West Ham man brings to the team is an uncanny ability to get around opponents and get away from markers. Last season, the 25-year-old averaged a whopping 3.03 successful dribbles per 90 minutes, ranking him in the top 5% of players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues.
Spurs fans may not be too keen on the idea of bringing in Gakpo, but he is a proven Premier League talent and the Dutchman would be a better option than Savinho for the goals they are looking for.
During the 2024/25 season, in which Liverpool won the title, the attacker scored 18 goals in all competitions, proving his credentials as a prolific wide player.
The 27-year-old only hit the bag nine times in 2025/26, but he is still a dangerous player and, like Kudus, a real threat in one-on-one situations.

In fact, Gakpo, like Kudus, could be a player who could get Spurs on the pitch faster and more effectively. The two are very similar when it comes to ball running, which is one of the Ghanaian’s strengths.
As a result, the idea of these two players featuring on the flanks opposite each other is a truly exciting prospect.
Indeed, Rashford’s other options may be more proven. Once upon a time, he might have scored 30 goals in a season for Manchester United. However, Gakpo is by no means a bad player. There’s a reason why he played such a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title win just a year ago.
Better than Gakpo: De Zerbi presses Spurs hierarchy to sign £40m winger
Codi Gakpo is not the only exciting winger to be on the radar for Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
