  • Rangers in contract talks with Italian star
  • Sebastiano Desplanches would be better off signing with Rangers than Ben Godfrey
        • Rangers could sign a £9m star with bigger talent than Ruskin or Ferguson

Glasgow Rangers are close to making a third signing in the summer transfer window, following the additions of Lawrence Shankland and Ross McCrorie.

They remain close to home once again, having brought in former England central defender Ben Godfrey on loan to strengthen Derek McInnes’ options at the back.

The Light Blues have reportedly reached an agreement with Serie A side Atalanta to bring the English star to Ibrox on a season-long loan, with an option to make the move permanent next year.

In recent years he has been loaned out to Ipswich Town, Sheffield United and Brondby, but none of the teams decided to pursue a permanent deal due to his performances.

The talented 28-year-old will be hoping that Rangers will be the club where he can get his career back on track following this loan move.

There is cause for concern in the job, as he has not played more than 16 games in all competitions in a season since the 2021/22 season, raising questions about his availability.

The former Norwich City centre-back may not be the only Italian signing, with the club eyeing a star player who could be an even better signing than Godfrey.

Glasgow Rangers are one of a number of clubs interested in signing Palermo goalkeeper Sebastiano Desplanches in the summer transfer window, according to reports in Italy.

The reporter claims that several Italian teams and Philippe Clement’s English side Norwich City are also in the race to sign the 23-year-old stopper.

It has emerged that both Rangers and Norwich have been in contact with Palmero to discuss what a deal could look like for the Italian youngster this summer.

However, the journalist did not say how much the Serie B side intends to demand from the talented young goalkeeper, or whether the Gers side is ready to make an offer for his services.

As mentioned above, it remains to be seen whether this will be a good deal for Rangers and McInnes, given how much Godfrey has struggled in recent seasons.

The centre-back, who played 12 games on loan at Danish Superliga side Brondby, lost 61% of his ground game and made two mistakes that led to opponents’ shots and penalties, suggesting he may not be Gers’ most reliable and complete defender.

Desplanches, meanwhile, has been on loan at Serie B side Pescara for the 2025/26 season and has attracted attention for his form, so he could join Ibrox as an upgrade to the abilities currently at McInnes’ disposal.

Jack Butland was too error-prone for Gers between the sticks in last season’s Scottish Premiership, making seven mistakes that led to opponents’ shots or goals, while the Italian only made three such mistakes for his team.

Desplanches’ per-90 stats suggest that if he can carry that form into the Premiership, he could become more effective at getting in behind defenders and as an absolute shot-stopper.

The talented 23-year-old has also shown his skills on the international stage with Italy, playing in three games at last year’s European Under-21 Championships, keeping two clean sheets and saving a penalty.

Although he missed the end of last season with a hamstring injury, Desplanches is expected to be fit again in pre-season and could join the Light Blues to compete with Butland for the number one spot, with the possibility of him being dropped depending on his form in Italy.

On the other hand, Godfrey’s form at Brondby and recent struggles during multiple loan spells from Atalanta make it unlikely that he will become a full-fledged star for Rangers.

That means Desplanches could be an even better deal for the club if they can reach an agreement with Palermo to bring him to Ibrox this summer.
