World No. 5 Ben Shelton was eliminated in the first round at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships. Shelton lost a hard-fought match to Otto Virtanen in five sets on Tuesday.

Virtanen earned one of the qualifying spots with three wins and fought his way to a draw. Virtanen was a +303 underdog in the opening game against the tournament’s No. 4 seed.

Virtanen took the first set and immediately put Shelton in an uncomfortable position. Shelton made a comeback and won the second set 6-3. The third set went to a tiebreak, with Shelton winning 10-8.

Shelton seemed to have control of the match, but he faltered in the fourth set, and Virtanen evened things out with a 6-2 set victory.

Back-and-forth play continued in the final set, with neither player able to fully control the match, allowing each other to break and forcing another tie-break. This time, it was Virtanen who defeated the sport’s top-ranked American, winning the tiebreak 11-9 and winning the match.

Interestingly, Shelton (41) made fewer unforced errors than Virtanen (49), but his worst moments came at the worst possible times, including several errors that ultimately clinched the final tiebreaker.

Shelton reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2025, and some believe he could make another breakthrough this year. Instead, Shelton was eliminated in the first round and Virtanen drew, making it an early Cinderella story.
