  • O’Neill presses forward with signing Alfie Devine
  • Celtic should try their best to sign Devine

Martin O’Neill is probably more aware than anyone of just how much work the current Celtic side needs. The veteran manager forced the Bhoys over the line last season, but it is not as routine as many would expect and Parkhead managers will be desperate to avoid similar tensions.

The Rangers’ business also certainly increases the pressure on the champions. Gers have already brought in a number of fresh faces and Celtic could be forced to respond by signing a Premier League midfielder.

Following an impressive loan spell with Preston North End last time out, O’Neill is now reported to be leading the charge to sign Alfie Devine from Tottenham Hotspur.

Football Fancast Verdict

reliability

Devine has attracted Celtic’s attention numerous times over the past 12 months and with his game time at Tottenham unlikely to improve, a permanent move should be on the cards. After proving his quality in the Championship, a move to Scotland would certainly make sense.

finances

It remains to be seen how much Spurs will charge for the young defender. He still has a lot of potential at just 21 years old and has spent the last few seasons on loan.

insight

Devine spent time in Belgium and the Championship, gaining much-needed experience and winning many accolades. Last season was his most impressive to date, scoring eight goals and assisting a further eight in all competitions.

impact

Devine’s arrival will certainly raise question marks over the future of other midfield stars. Arne Engels has always been the subject of speculation and the Tottenham man could soon replace him.

If Tottenham’s asking price is within Celtic’s range, the Bhoys should make an offer as soon as possible and hand O’Neill a transfer target.

O’Neill presses forward with signing Alfie Devine

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports. O’Neill is behind Celtic’s move to sign Devine from Tottenham this summer. Boies has already completed a scouting mission for the midfielder and could now accelerate his pursuit.

“Alfie Devine is a player that Celtic have been tracking for some time. Martin O’Neill and his coaching staff were on regular scouting trips to see Devine in action at Preston last season.” – O’Rourke

The former Preston loanee would be a strong candidate to join for the right price this summer as Celtic look to revive their front line.

Celtic should try their best to sign Devine

On paper, Divine checks all the boxes. Although he is young, he is not inexperienced. He is a player that O’Neill has already seen in person and has been impressed with, and one that Spurs are keen to sell.

With Daenen Maeda publicly considering his future and rumors of a potential signing for Engels, the Boies desperately need the boost that Devine could provide.

Bringing in young talent from the Premier League would be the perfect statement as Parkhead bosses push to open transfer business.
