Liverpool crisis? Surprise departure announced after Reds reluctantly accepted request

Liverpool have reportedly been dealt a blow with Michael Edwards stepping down from his role as chief football operations officer at Fenway Sports Group.

The Reds are sure to be upset by the news, reported by The Times and others, as Edwards was a key part of the club’s transfer strategy during a hugely successful era for the club under Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slott.

A report in the Times suggests Edwards informed FSG of his decision some time ago and that there was some frustration behind the scenes over a lack of commitment to the multi-club model.

Edwards is in his second spell at Liverpool, leaving in 2022 and returning in a slightly different role in 2024.

What does Michael Edwards’ departure mean for Liverpool’s transfer plans?

Edwards’ departure was a blow to LFC, and the club appears to have reluctantly accepted his decision.

As The Times also pointed out, this comes amid rumors that sporting director Richard Hughes has also been linked to Saudi Professional League club Al Hilal.

The pair’s departures are not expected to disrupt the club’s ability to complete business this summer, but it looks far from ideal for the Merseyside giants going forward.

There has been a lot of turmoil at Anfield in recent years, with Slott being sacked as manager this summer and replaced by Andoni Iraola.

Meanwhile, big names such as Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson and Ibrahima Konate left on free transfers following the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold last year.

This is truly a new era for Liverpool, and it is unclear at this point what that will look like.

For additional information by Ben Jacobs, see below. He has stated that Mike Gordon will replace Edwards for now…

“Breaking News: Michael Edwards has stepped down from his role as FSG’s CEO of Football. Mike Gordon will take the reins of football operations,” Jacobs wrote on X.
