The 2026 British Open Championship moves into the second round on Friday, and there will be some surprising names at the top of the leaderboard. In the only round of his career at the British Open, Jackson Suber shot a first-round 65 to take a share of the lead at 5 under.
Suber won’t be sleeping long nights on the leash and that might be best for his nerves. He is scheduled to be the first to tee on Friday morning at 2:30 a.m. ET (7:30 a.m. local time), giving him a chance to extend his advantage if he can stay healthy.
The most notable pursuer to emerge early on was Cameron Young (-3). He is scheduled to tee off at 4:58 a.m. alongside Windham Clark (+3) and Ludwig Oberg (+1), each of whom has work to do to secure a weekend tee time. In the group behind them, pre-tournament favorites Rory McIlroy (+2), Matt Fitzpatrick (+2) and Xander Schauffele (+1) will be trying hard to make it to the 5:09 a.m. start time.
The later waves will see how Bryson DeChambeau (-3), Scottie Scheffler (-2) and Tyrrell Hatton (-1) handle the tougher afternoon conditions expected at Royal Birkdale at 10:04 a.m. after all three competed in Thursday morning’s red-number round. Tommy Fleetwood (-1), Jon Rahm (-1) and Jordan Spieth (+3) are the next group to depart at 10:15, with Fleetwood hoping to ride the support of his home fans into the weekend to move up the leaderboard.
