Mavericks’ Anthony Davis Eyes Season Debut After Successful Isolated Retina Surgery

Anthony Davis missed a significant portion of last season due to an abdominal injury, but that wasn’t the only issue he was dealing with. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Davis underwent surgery to repair a retinal injury he sustained during the season. Charania mentioned that Davis endured multiple hits to the face while playing and is expected to be ready for the start of the upcoming season.

The report mentions “retinal detachment,” a term often used to describe retinal tears or bruises, conditions that can usually be treated successfully, often with laser surgery. This type of injury is generally considered highly treatable.

Several NBA players, including Dirk Nowitzki, have experienced retinal injuries, but surgery generally has a strong success rate in recovery.

Last season, Davis averaged 24.7 points, 11.6 rebounds per game, and delivered elite-level defense across 51 games. In the coming season, a fully healthy Davis will team up with No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg, similar to Derrick Lively II, creating one of the most promising frontcourts in the NBA.

Fan Take: This news is a huge relief for basketball fans who worry about the health of star players like Davis. His recovery and return to full strength could significantly boost his team’s performance and add excitement to the league’s frontcourt battles next season.
