Luis Enrique: PSG’s Super Cup Victory Unjustified

Louis Enrique, coach of Paris Saint-Germain, expressed that his team was “not deserving” of winning the UEFA Super Cup after they triumphed over Tottenham Hotspur in a penalty shootout on Wednesday.

Nuno Mendes marked his return to PSG by scoring during a crucial moment when Tottenham was ahead 2-0 in the 85th minute of the match, which is contested annually between the Champions League and Europa League champions.

Enrique pointed out the significant differences in fitness levels between the two teams, noting that PSG had only recently resumed training after their Club World Cup final last month.

“For 80 minutes, we didn’t deserve to win; Tottenham played better,” he asserted. “We’ve only been back in training for six days, and football can be unfair. We’re grateful to have scored two goals in the last ten minutes.”

Lee Kang-in gave PSG a glimmer of hope with a powerful strike into the bottom corner, while Gonzalo Ramos equalized with just four minutes of stoppage time remaining, making it 2-2 at Udine’s Studio Friuli.

Despite being in a strong position to take the upset, Tottenham initially led the shootout 2-0 after PSG’s Vitanya missed his penalty. However, Spurs players Mickey Van De Ben and Mattis Tell both failed to convert their kicks, allowing PSG to win by scoring four consecutive penalties.

Enrique commented, “My players, like our supporters, believed until the very end.” It was a significant debut for goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who just signed from Lille.

Chevalier faced misfortune conceding Tottenham’s first goal in the 39th minute when Van De Ben responded quickly, striking the crossbar. He could have been blamed for the second goal as he failed to secure a header from newly appointed Tottenham captain Christian Romero just after halftime.

Chevalier concluded the match with a crucial save of Van De Ben’s penalty in the shootout, where Gianluigi Donnarumma typically excels in decisive moments. The Italian goalkeeper was notably absent from the match in Italy earlier this week.

“This demonstrates exceptional character,” Enrique stated. “It’s vital to have such qualities at a club like PSG, given the immense pressure surrounding us. I’m very pleased with him.”

Vitanya, the PSG midfielder, added, “This truly shows the essence of teamwork. When one falters, it’s remarkable how everyone comes together to support and win.”

Fan Take: This victory, though hard-fought, highlights the unpredictable nature of football, emphasizing that preparation and resilience are essential regardless of past accolades. For fans, it showcases PSG’s potential readiness for the season ahead, raising excitement for what’s to come in the world of soccer.
