Dearika Hamby and Ace Reach Settlement, Dropping Pregnancy Discrimination Case

Dearica Hamby and the Las Vegas Aces have jointly decided to drop the lawsuit she filed against the team, according to Front Office Sports. In August 2024, Hamby accused the Aces of discrimination and being traded during her pregnancy in 2023. The complaint stated that the Aces’ head coach, Becky Hammon, questioned Hamby’s commitment and accused her of hiding her pregnancy when signing a contract extension.

On December 11, both parties requested the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada to dismiss the case, agreeing to cover their own legal expenses without demanding reimbursement from each other.

Dearica Hamby was originally drafted by the San Antonio Stars in 2015 and relocated with the team to Las Vegas in 2018. After eight seasons, she was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks in January 2023. Following the birth of her son in March 2023, Hamby played a then-career-high 40 games during her first season with the Sparks and is now preparing for her fourth season with the team. In 2025, she started all 44 games, posting averages of 21.2 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 3.8 assists.

Fan Take: This resolution highlights the importance of addressing pregnancy discrimination in professional sports, offering hope for future protections and fairness in the WNBA. Hamby’s courageous stance and the outcome could pave the way for more inclusive policies, benefiting athletes balancing motherhood and their careers.
