Charles Town to Boost Wallet Balances Beginning February 11th

Hollywood Casino at Charles Towne Races has revealed a 7.5% increase in purse money, effective with the start of the next condition book on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. This boost follows previous funding restorations after cuts caused by the 2014 “haircut bill,” made possible through ongoing support from West Virginia lawmakers. The full increase will apply to overnight races and raises the open maiden special weight purse to $32,900, enhancing the racing program and benefiting all involved parties, including jockeys, owners, trainers, and fans.

Charles Town’s Director of Horse Racing Operations, Charlie McIntosh, expressed enthusiasm about launching the increase during the peak of the winter-spring racing season. He noted that the added funds, which stem from prior legislative efforts to replenish purse funds, are expected to draw larger, more competitive fields and provide better racing experiences for all stakeholders. This marks a victory for the Charles Town racing community, with a commitment to further strengthen the program.

Jim Miller, President of the Charles Town Horsemen’s Charitable and Protective Association, highlighted the collaboration with Hollywood Casino to deliver this 7.5% purse increase starting February 2026, following a 10% rise in July 2025. Miller credited the local Eastern Panhandle legislators—Senator Jason Barrett, Patricia Rucker, Delegate Joe Fankhauser, and Delegate Wayne Clark—for their continued dedication to supporting West Virginia’s thoroughbred industry.

Races will continue Wednesday through Saturday throughout March, shifting back to a Thursday through Saturday schedule in April.

Fan Take: This purse increase is a crucial development for horse racing enthusiasts, as it signals renewed investment and confidence in the sport’s future at Charles Towne. With higher purses attracting stronger competition, fans can look forward to more exciting and competitive races, which is vital for keeping the sport vibrant and engaging.
