Argentine Chief: We’ve Stepped Out of Messi’s Shadow!

Argentina has adapted to playing without Lionel Messi, no longer needing to adjust their squad drastically when the InterMiami forward is unavailable, according to manager Lionel Scaroni ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against Colombia this Wednesday.

Since his debut in 2005, Messi has netted 112 goals for Argentina in 192 appearances, clinched the World Cup in 2022, and secured two Copa America titles alongside gold medals from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The 37-year-old captain missed Argentina’s recent 1-0 win over Uruguay and the 4-1 defeat of Brazil in March due to injury.

However, he has rejoined the team for this month’s qualifiers and played in last week’s narrow victory.

“The team has reached a point where they can perform consistently without Leo or with him, which was more challenging in the past as they had to modify their lineup,” Scaroni told the press before the match in Buenos Aires.

“Now, we no longer face that issue; our squad is functioning cohesively, which is a positive development.”

Argentina has previously participated in the North American World Cup, while Colombia is vying for the sixth automatic qualification spot, hoping to extend their lead over seventh-placed Venezuela with a victory.

In their last World Cup qualifying encounter in September, Colombia triumphed over Argentina 2-1.

“Colombia boasts a strong team with talented players and a distinct style that poses challenges,” Scaroni remarked.

“We’ve analyzed their strengths and have prepared our tactics to exploit them. It promises to be an exciting match, especially since we’re at home.”
