Murphy’s lawyers apologized for his significant mistake of driving under the influence near Hermitage, Berkshire.

In late 2021, the BHA accused him of misleading investigators, failing alcohol tests, and damaging the sport’s integrity. One failed alcohol test occurred after a pub brawl in Newmarket, yet he still managed to ride and win a major race shortly after. Murphy’s license was restored with a 14-month ban served beforehand and strict conditions to remain drug- and alcohol-free.

Murphy continues to undergo random alcohol testing and regular therapy sessions, with the BHA warning that non-compliance could lead to license suspension or revocation. As these issues catch up to him, Murphy faces more than just minor obstacles—his career may be on the line.
