Jets QB Justinfield Dislocates Toe in Daring Move to Dodge Major Injury

At the Jets’ training facility in Florham Park, N.J., quarterback Justin Fields was helped off the field Thursday morning after an injury to his right toe, but the team announced he is not expected to suffer any serious harm. Fields is anticipated to be ready for the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Head coach Aaron Glenn said he was awaiting test results and declined to guess the injury’s severity.

By midday, a sense of relief spread among the Jets, who have recently been plagued by quarterback injuries during preseason and early regular season games—most notably when Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles on the first play of the 2023 season opener. The main drawback of Fields’ injury is missing valuable training camp reps as he continues to recover after limited playtime last year. He started the first six games for the Steelers before being replaced by Russell Wilson and is currently learning new offensive systems and building rapport with teammates.

Veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who has 58 career starts, took over offensive reps during Fields’ absence. The injury happened early on the second day of training camp when Fields rolled his right foot at 9:25 a.m. while throwing an incomplete pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert. He went down, briefly sat on the ground limping, and was later helped off with trainer assistance. After several minutes in the medical tent, Fields eventually walked into the team facility on his own.

Glenn speculated the injury might have happened when Fields stepped on a teammate’s foot but said he needed to review video footage to be sure. “When someone falls, there’s a lump in my throat,” Glenn said. “I hate injuries to any player, but I want to know the exact nature of the injury before jumping to conclusions.”

Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract as a free agent, remains the Jets’ clear starting quarterback. Meanwhile, the team also has 2024 United Football League MVP Adrian Martinez and rookie Brady Cook on the roster, though neither has yet played in an NFL game. Glenn emphasized that even if Fields were sidelined, the team’s play style and objectives would not change.

Fan Take: This update brings some relief to Jets fans and NFL followers who know how quickly a promising season can be derailed by injuries. Justin Fields is a key figure for the Jets’ future, and his health will be crucial not only for his team’s success but also for maintaining competitive excitement in the league this year.
