Happy Wednesday! Carter Burns is here with your morning newsletter. This is the NFL season opener episode. This gives some light at the end of the tunnel on this hump day. The depth chart is throughout the league, with several last-minute transactions taking place, and the first week NFL power rankings provide the final look of the preseason pecking order. The smell of soccer is finally in the air.
But that’s not all. Let’s get started…

- Ohio is back to the top with the AP Top 25 poll in the second week. AP Top 25 didn’t have enough movement. The Buckeyes jumped into first place with most of the first-place votes after a defensive masterclass against Texas. LSU (No. 3) and Florida (No. 14) were also major climbers. Meanwhile, Alabama has fallen to the 21st. This is the lowest ranking in 17 years.
- Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was diagnosed with torn ACL. The Diamondbacks outfielder suffered a knee injury in a strange play Monday night, and it was a serious one. Arizona put him on the injured list on Tuesday, but it’s unlikely he’s going to return to the field until at least mid-2026 season. Injuries have contractual implications. This is because Gurriel will be near locks to opt for next year’s $13 million player options.
- Luke Godeke received the reward. Buccaneers signed the right tackle on a four-year, $90 million contract extension, guaranteed by $50 million. Goedeke’s new annual salary is the third-best of the NFL right tackles, and is a testament to Tampa Bay’s ability to develop prolific offensive linemen.
- There is the first NFL power ranking of the season. And the Eagles are a winning team. But that’s not to stop our Pete Prisco from flapping wings with the Bills as his preseason Super Bowl pick.
- The NCAA is facing another lawsuit, and that’s amazing. Two Vanderbilt football players are leading a class action lawsuit that alleges the NCAA redshirt rules violate antitrust laws. If a judge is on his side with the athlete, it could change college sports forever. (Stop me if you’ve heard of it before.) I explained why this leads athletes to play college sports for five years, not four.

Speaking of Hunter, the rookie wide receiver known for torching him in college is giant Depth chart. In Meadowland, giant I’ll ride together Jackson Dirt As a major backup of Russell Wilson. The rookie jumped over Jameis Winston Though he’s a coach, he’s on the depth chart. Brian Dabor I did not check if DART jumps to the QB2 role.

There are no more American men in the American Open. No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz I will fight against No. 7 Novak Djokovicbut for the 11th time in many matches, Serbian legend got the final laugh. With a 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory, Djokovic is on the way to the semi-finals, where he meets No. 2 seed Carlos Alcalaz on friday.
There were two takeaways from the match, and Zac Pereles said it best – a hat tip to the author of the current CBS Sports Morning Newsletter.
- Pereles: “It’s yet another loss that Fritz shook his head incredibly, and many viewers are doing the same thing about the other. Is Djokovic doing it at 38?”
Djokovic was under early control, but the crowds of his house helped him to sway the momentum as Fritz got off the mat on the third set. Djokovic approached the umpire of the chair with a plea from a fan who had been caught with Fritz to calm the jeers, but instead it was his play.
