The thruline at the 2025 ProCol Championship saw 10 out of 12 members of the US Ryder Cup team taking part in final coordination of major international events. After three rounds of play in Napa, California, four of the Ryder Cup players are sitting in the top 10 of the leaderboard.
Ben Griffin has been in the final round and remains at the top with 16, but after a hot start in the third round at 70, the pack is now able to close his gap.
Right behind Griffin is the amateur Jackson Coeven. Auburn Junior has taken a top 10 finish on the PGA Tour this season, cutting seven of his nine starts in a very impressive year during his amateur year. This go-around is gaining experience when Koivun jumps to the professional ranks next year, and getting the opportunity to play for a victory in the final pairing is another new experience for the 20-year-old.
This is a particularly interesting experience for amateurs as they are currently pursuing these two in third place. Schaeffler fired a 64 of the third round, climbing 11 spots on the leaderboard, and entering the final round behind Griffin’s two innings. Even when he made a mistake, he quickly got out of trouble to produce an epic birdie, so it was the round observer you would expect from Schaeffler.
Schaeffler enters Sunday and is about to repeat his performance from the BMW Championship as he walks Robert McIntyre in the final round. In that tournament he was able to apply pressure from the final pairing. On Sunday in Napa, he will do so from the penultimate group along with Garrick Higugo (-13).
JJ Spaun and Russell Henley began moving in the top five for a day, but returned to T9 in their respective rounds of 72 and 74. The two Rider Cup rookies will bounce off on Sunday with a strong finish and see if they can’t climb a little higher. With the lead’s seven shots (5 shots from Scheffler), they may not be competing for the victory.
The rest of the US Ryder Cup teams are back in the pack more. Cameron Young (-7), Sam Burns (-5), Patrick Cantray (-4), Colin Morakawa (-4), Harris English (-3), and Justin Thomas (-2) won’t hunt for victory, but we’ll look at Sunday as a chance to dial in a final feeling in a competitive environment before a few weeks of competition.
