Arsenal faces a setback ahead of the North London derby as crucial defender Gabriel Magalhães is expected to be out for “a number of weeks.”

The 27-year-old has been a consistent presence in the Gunners’ lineup, which has only conceded five goals in the Premier League this season. Unfortunately, he picked up a thigh injury while on international duty with Brazil.

He had also shown signs of trouble during Arsenal’s friendly match against Senegal at the Emirates Stadium over the weekend.

Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed that Gabriel would be unavailable for the upcoming match against Tottenham and likely for a longer period. “It’s unfortunate that Gabriel sustained this injury while with the Brazilian national team; he will be out for several weeks,” Arteta stated.

“We plan to conduct another scan next Wednesday, which should provide us with a clearer timeline for his recovery.”

Piero Hincapie and Cristian Mosquera are in line to step in for Gabriel during the match against Spurs.

Arteta expressed disappointment over the loss, saying, “He’s our backline leader, so losing him is a significant setback. However, we have solid options, and now it’s time for others to rise to the occasion.”

Several players, including Victor Gokore, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Noni Maduke, and captain Martin Odegaard, have also been dealing with injuries, but Arteta is optimistic about updates on at least two of them by Sunday.

“We dedicated significant resources to collaborate with our medical staff during the international break, aiming to integrate players back as soon as possible,” Arteta added.

“We have another training session tomorrow to assess their readiness for the game and determine if they can contribute.”

On another note, winger Bukayo Saka is reportedly in talks for a new contract, which currently expires in 2027. “What I know is that he wants to stay with us and is excited about our shared goals,” Arteta commented. “The timing and details of it will be up to (sporting director) Andrea (Berta) and the club.”

This injury news is significant for soccer fans, as it highlights the vulnerability of key players in high-stakes matches like the North London derby. Additionally, how Arsenal manages this situation could set the tone for their campaign moving forward, emphasizing depth in the squad.
