Santa Anita Delays Opening as Storm Looms

Santa Anita has announced a delay in the start of its 89th winter horse racing season, pushing the opening day back two days to December 28 due to forecasts of severe storms. Typically, the season kicks off the day after Christmas, but this marks the first time since the 2019-20 season that the historic Arcadia track will not open on December 26, a year when the opening was also postponed by two days. Meteorologists predict that an atmospheric river will impact Southern California from Tuesday through Friday, prompting the track to hold turf races on their grass courses until the 28th. Santa Anita General Manager Nate Newby emphasized the importance of early communication given the heavy rain expected, noting the significance of Opening Day as a key event for the racing community. The initial week of racing will now take place on December 28 and 29, then continue from December 31 through January 4.

Fan Take: This delay is a reminder of how weather can impact the sport, affecting schedules and preparations for trainers, jockeys, and fans alike. For horse racing enthusiasts, it highlights the resilience required to keep the sport thriving despite unforeseen challenges, underlining the importance of flexibility in maintaining safe and exciting racing conditions.
