The NHL season is approaching a nearly three-week break for the 2026 Winter Olympics, which is just under two weeks away. The Colorado Avalanche, who had a stellar start to the season with impressive win-loss records in October, November, and December, have recently experienced a dip in form, losing six of their last eleven games, including four regulation losses—twice the number of such losses in their first forty games. As the Avalanche (35-6-9) prepare for their final five games before the Olympic hiatus—three of which are on the road—they have faced tougher competition and seen some recent setbacks. Week 16 concluded with the Tampa Bay Lightning slightly closing the gap in the standings, trailing by nine points, while the Minnesota Wild lead the Western Conference by eleven points. Six teams remained undefeated in regulation during that week, though three teams struggled, remaining winless in regulation.

The weekly power rankings highlight the top teams based on recent performances and overall season work. Leading the rankings is Colorado, which, despite some recent losses, remains one of the few teams in NHL history to lose fewer than seven regulation games in the first 50 games. Notable performances include Brock Nelson’s career-high goals and Nathan MacKinnon’s continued scoring pace. Tampa Bay, Carolina, Detroit, and Minnesota follow in the rankings, with each team displaying strong recent form or key individual contributions. Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Boston, and Florida also made notable moves up the standings thanks to winning streaks or impressive wins last week.

This snapshot of team performance not only reflects current standings but also sets the tone for the final stretch before the Olympics pause, offering fans insights into who might challenge for the ultimate honors this season.

Fan Take: This update is crucial for hockey enthusiasts because it underscores the intense competition and shifting tides within the league, which can dramatically influence playoff seeding. The upcoming break also provides teams a chance to regroup, making these final games before the Olympics a crucial preview of who might rise to the top in the second half of the season.
