Inter Miami Welcomes Bertelame with Exciting Long-Term Designated Player Deal!

Inter Miami CF has officially signed Mexican international forward Germán Bertelame from Liga MX’s prominent Monterrey, as announced on Friday.

Bertelame will join Lionel Messi and the current MLS Cup champions as a designated player, with a contract that runs until 2029, along with an option for an extra year. The deal was finalized after Inter Miami activated a $15 million release clause, according to ESPN’s Lizzie Becherano.

In a video shared on Rayados de Monterrey’s social channels, Bertelame expressed, “I leave with a clear conscience, having always given my best for this club. I hope to return sooner.” He added, “This chance to join Miami is completely new and a unique experience. It was unexpected, but I believe it will be fantastic.”

Reflecting on his previous contract renewal with Monterrey, Bertelame joked about only leaving for something truly remarkable—like the arrival of Messi—and that anecdote has stayed with him.

The forward, who became a naturalized Mexican citizen in 2024, began his career in Argentina’s Primera División with San Lorenzo and Patronato before debuting in Liga MX with Atlético San Luis in 2019. During his time with Atlético San Luis, he scored 31 goals in 93 appearances and claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021 Apertura tournament.

His impressive performances in Liga MX earned him a place on the Mexican national team, although he initially played for Argentina’s youth squads. Bertelame notably scored the decisive goal for Mexico in a recent friendly against Bolivia as they prepare for the World Cup.

While several MLS teams had shown interest in Bertelame, including FC Cincinnati, discussions to activate his release clause did not pan out.

Fan Take: This signing is significant for soccer fans as it underscores the growing allure of MLS and its ability to attract top talent, especially when joining stars like Messi. Bertelame’s move could pave the way for a more competitive league, enhancing the overall quality of soccer in North America.
