  • Dominik Szoboszlai: ‘Liverpool’s future is out of my control’
  • Szoboszlai has been Liverpool’s best player this season
  • Richard Hughes has come under fire for recent inappropriate transfer deals.

Dominik Szoboszlai has admitted that his future at Liverpool is no longer in his hands after confirming there has been no progress in contract extension talks with the club.

Despite being the star man for Arne Slott’s side this season, the Hungarian captain’s latest updates have raised concerns among Anfield fans about his long-term stay on Merseyside.

After being forced into the emergency right-back role in Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Newcastle on Saturday, Szoboszlai spoke candidly about the lack of movement regarding a new contract.

He said this (via The Athletic):

“To be honest, there’s nothing yet. Nothing, from now on…is out of my hands.”

“This is how it works. Even if I wanted to stay, I honestly don’t…I’m not making any progress, but if the right offer comes along I’ll see.”

His current contract runs until 2028, but the club reportedly began talks to reward his form earlier this season.

But Szoboszlai’s admission that the situation was “not my fault” suggests a rift in negotiations between his agent and sporting director Richard Hughes.

“Right now I’m doing my job on the pitch, but what will the future hold?

“I love this city. I love the club. I love playing with them. I love Anfield. I love the fans. Let’s see what the future holds. It doesn’t matter to me. I want to[stay].”

The 25-year-old has attracted strong interest from Real Madrid and Manchester City.

The timing of the deal stalemate is particularly worrying given Szoboszlai’s arguably outstanding performance for Liverpool this season.

He is the club’s most consistent creative force and has already scored eight goals and provided seven assists in 33 competitive games.

His importance was on full display against Newcastle, where he played a defensive role due to injuries to Jeremy Frimpong and Conor Bradley.

Statistically, he leads the Premier League in shots taken from outside the box (34), underscoring his role as the main attacking threat.

He has also played six different positions thus far, showing incredible versatility.

Losing the influential No. 8 would be a devastating blow to the project under Arne Slott, as Liverpool are currently competing for the Premier League and Champions League titles.

Richard Hughes has come under fire for recent inappropriate transfer deals.

The uncertainty surrounding Szoboszlai is adding to the pressure on sporting director Richard Hughes, who has come under fire for a series of failed negotiations.

Liverpool famously failed to sign top defensive target Marc Guehi in the summer of 2025, leaving fans unhappy.

Hughes was accused of delaying a final decision and allowing Crystal Palace to back out of the deal, even though an agreement had reportedly been reached. To make matters worse, just a few weeks ago Gehi joined rivals Manchester City on a cut-price deal in January.

And now, Lutcharel Giltruida’s movement seems to have collapsed.

Despite agreeing personal terms with the RB Leipzig player, who is currently on loan at Sunderland, it is currently reported that a deal is unlikely to go ahead.

In addition to this, the lack of progress in contract negotiations with Szoboszlai and Konate has left fans dissatisfied.
