Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino is likely to be sidelined for an extended period due to a foot injury, potentially missing the remainder of the season. He is set to undergo surgery for the injury sustained during last weekend’s loss to Manchester United. In light of his absence, Arsenal may look for a temporary replacement in the winter transfer window.

Merino’s Injury Concerns Arsenal

Merino missed Arsenal’s convincing 4-0 victory over Leeds United, with manager Arteta revealing the reason to be a foot injury. A club statement on Sunday confirmed that Merino has a bone injury that will require surgery in the coming days, noting that his recovery will take a significant amount of time, though the team hopes to see him back in training before the season concludes.

According to David Ornstein from The Athletic, Arsenal is contemplating a short-term loan to fill Merino’s role as the transfer deadline approaches, but there’s no assurance that a deal will be finalized.

This season, Merino has appeared 33 times for Arsenal, demonstrating his versatility as a midfielder and makeshift striker, while also representing Spain internationally. Though he will miss the March international matches, he aims to participate in this summer’s World Cup.

Arteta Praises Merino’s Versatility

At a press conference earlier in the season, Arteta expressed his appreciation for Merino’s ability to function as a striker, saying, “While achieving your dreams as a striker can be challenging, we knew he had more to offer. Especially after our first meeting, it’s difficult to set limits on a player so eager and passionate about their craft.”

Injury Woes at Arsenal

Arsenal, who currently lead the Premier League, have faced significant injury issues this season, including absences from key players like Martin Odegaard, Gabriel, and Riccardo Calafioli. Bukayo Saka also missed the win against Leeds, while strikers Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz have recently returned from extended injuries.

The Gunners are keen to end a 22-year league title drought and aim for a perfect start in the Champions League, remaining competitive in both domestic cup competitions.

What’s Next for Arsenal?

Arsenal is set to face Chelsea in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday, holding a 3-2 aggregate lead, but Merino will definitely be missing. Arteta’s squad will continue pursuing domestic success and will play Sunderland in the Premier League in just four days.

Fan Take: The potential absence of Merino highlights the fragility of squad depth in football; injuries like these can significantly impact a team’s title chase. For fans, this serves as a reminder of the importance of effective squad management and the necessity of a strong bench as clubs compete on multiple fronts.
