  • Liverpool have concerns about midfield control
  • Reds need to find a solution to their midfield problems

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has called for the club to prioritize signing a new central midfielder this summer, claiming his team’s inability to control games late in the game is a recurring problem.

The former defender made the comments while analyzing Liverpool’s performance in their recent match against Tottenham at Anfield. As the match progressed, the Reds once again struggled to maintain authority in midfield.

The match ended 1-1, with Dominik Szoboszlai scoring for the hosts and Richarlison equalizing for Spurs in the 90th minute.

The result was a huge blow to Arne Slott’s side, who are battling for a top-four spot in the Premier League.

Carragher believes the issue needs to be addressed in the next transfer window if the club wants to remain competitive at the highest level.

Liverpool have concerns about midfield control

Carragher’s analysis focused specifically on Alexis Mac Allister, who has played a key role in Liverpool’s midfield this season.

The World Cup winner is one of the most technically gifted players in the squad, but Carragher suggested the demands placed on him throughout the match were starting to show in the latter stages of games.

Carragher said during the broadcast, as reported by Sky Sports:

“The longer each game goes on, the more Mac Allister struggles, which is a big problem for Liverpool at the heart of midfield.

“That’s something they have to deal with in the summer or whether Szoboszlai returns to the central midfield position.

“When Jones comes in and the game goes end-to-end, I don’t see why he would take Wirtz’s spot.

“He’s not that kind of player anyway. You could go with a 4-3-3 and put extra bodies in front of the back four. There’s too much space.”

Carragher’s comments are indicative of an issue that Liverpool’s coaching staff may already be assessing ahead of the summer transfer window.

Midfield balance remains a key element as clubs move between multiple competitions and aim to challenge for big trophies.

Whether Liverpool bring in a new midfielder or adjust their tactical approach, their ability to control games in the late stages could be crucial to their success in the upcoming season.

Their midfield strength will be put to the test again this week in the Champions League against Galatasaray.
