Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has attracted strong interest from Saudi Arabia, particularly Al Hilal, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.

When Hughes arrived at Liverpool in 2024, the club was at a crossroads.

Despite manager Jurgen Klopp’s farewell and Arne Slott’s new addition to the dugout, there were serious doubts as to whether FSG would be able to attract the level of talent needed to rebuild for a new era.

Mr. Hughes answered these questions forcefully.

In his second summer transfer window, the former Bournemouth manager oversaw the signing of a series of statements that sent a message to the rest of the Premier League.

Alexander Isaac arrived from Newcastle. We have signed Florian Wirtz, one of the most coveted midfielders in European football, from Bayer Leverkusen. Hugo Ekitike added more firepower. The ambition was unmistakable and the investment was huge.

Liverpool lead the race to sign the £208,000-a-week Champions League star and are in talks with Chelsea.

The Reds are in pole position.

It hasn’t been a seamless journey. There are doubts about the impact of these additions, as the team’s form does not justify the expense.

The decision has raised eyebrows within the dynamics at Anfield, with some suggesting Hughes overruled Slott’s decision to sell Luis Dias to Bayern Munich.

But in terms of the club’s trajectory, the direction it is heading is clear. Liverpool are spending big, thinking big and competing at the top of European football’s transfer market. Hughes was at the center of it all.

This is precisely why Romano’s revelations this week will raise eyebrows in the red half of Merseyside.

Fabrizio Romano reveals Richard Hughes’ stance on leaving Liverpool

Romano said on his YouTube channel that Saudi Professional League giants Al Hilal have identified Hughes as their primary target for the director of football role and the interest is serious.

Mr. Romano was clear in affirming that story.

“I can confirm that Liverpool manager Richard Hughes is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, particularly Al Hilal, according to reports in Saudi Arabia.

“Richard Hughes is therefore now the clear favorite to be Al Hilal’s future manager.”

However, at this point, the situation becomes quite delicate. That’s because Hughes himself isn’t pushing the exit door.

“Richard Hughes remains absolutely and completely committed to the Liverpool project and is very happy with the club,” Romano continued.

“So he remains completely focused on the Liverpool project, but the interest from Saudi Arabia is real. They are trying to find a solution from Saudi Arabia for the immediate future and for the future in Richard Hughes. Let’s see if they can find a way to appoint Richard Hughes. But I can give credit and I can confirm that there is interest. Let’s see what Richard Hughes decides.”

The last line is important. Hughes is happy. He is dedicated.

Liverpool will be watching this game closely.

With a summer rebuild on the horizon and a managerial situation still unresolved, losing Hughes would be a huge blow at the worst possible time.

But apparently he’s in no rush for the exit door.

Liverpool's Andy Robertson in training

Liverpool are currently considering replacing Andy Robertson with a ‘brilliant’ Brazilian who likes to drop bombs up front.

Robertson’s contract is set to expire in the summer.
