Jannik Sinner defeats Jiri Rehekka to win Miami Open

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — A day after Aryna Sabalenka achieved the same feat with a win over Coco Gauff, Jannik Sinner completed the “Sunshine Double” with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jiri Rehekka to win the Miami Open title on Sunday.

The last male player to complete the double was Roger Federer in 2017, winning Indian Wells and then Miami in the same season. Sinner is the first player to do so without dropping a set in either tournament.

“It’s a very, very special moment,” Sinner said. “It means a lot to me to be able to come here after Indian Wells and perform well. Coming here (from California) is physically demanding. I feel a little tired, but I’m very motivated.”

Second-seeded Sinner didn’t let either of the 90-minute rain delays slow him down. He had 10 service aces in the final, giving him 70 service aces in the tournament, the second most in his career. He often forced Rehekka, No. 21, to run left and right with accurate, deep groundstrokes.

The 24-year-old Sinner won his first 23 points with his first service point, and his winning streak continued until midway through the second set.

He becomes the eighth player to run in the standings at Indian Wells and Miami, and along with Sabalenka, the first to complete the double in the same year since Novak Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka in 2016.

It was Sinner’s second Miami Open title in three years, extending his winning streak at Hard Rock Stadium to 12 games starting in 2024. Last year, he was suspended after testing positive for a banned substance and did not play in the tournament.

“It’s been on my mind for a long time. I’ve been missing these types of tournaments,” Sinner said on Tennis Channel about missing last year’s event. These are very important weeks. ”

The 24-year-old Rehekka suffered a crushing defeat in her first ATP 1000 final, having lost all three of her previous matches to Sinner.

No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz was defeated in three sets by Sebastian Korda in the third round, and Djokovic was absent due to a problem with his right shoulder.

Due to rain, the recent women’s doubles final was held on the grandstand court. In doubles, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Sinakova defeated Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 to win the championship.
