Chelsea may be looking forward to the Xabi Alonso era, but there is no doubt that this season has been a disaster for the Blues, who sacked Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior and finished the Premier League season in 10th place.

There will be no European football for Chelsea next season, which affords Alonso the luxury of rest and recuperation, two key elements that are becoming increasingly rare for elite football teams in the modern climate.

Manchester United’s success in the second half of the season proves how a shortened calendar can benefit teams looking to make a comeback.

But Chelsea can’t afford to let something like this happen again. They need to bounce back quickly, even if a superstar like Enzo Fernandes is heading for an exit.

How can Chelsea replace Enzo Fernandes?

Fernandes is the definition of a big-time player and has had ups and downs at Chelsea over the years since joining from Benfica for £105m, but the 25-year-old has been a vital cog through some tough times.

But the captain feels he may have reached the end of the road. Manchester City, soon to be managed by Enzo Maresca, are interested in signing him this summer, and Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that negotiations are ongoing.

Needless to say, it will be difficult to replace him, especially since the Blues don’t offer an immediate transfer target in European football. That said, Alonso’s project is promising success, and his brute-force shrewdness could pay off for Londoners.

In fact, it has been confirmed that Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco is heading to Chelsea, with reports saying he plans to sign as soon as the transfer window opens. The former Brighton left-back has since become an increasingly powerful force in midfield and has now agreed a move to Stamford Bridge.

Despite interest from Germany’s top clubs, the 21-year-old is keen to remain in the BlueCo project and his all-action midfield style could attract attention as Fernandes moves towards an exit.

Why Barco could be Chelsea’s new Fernandes

Barco will be joined by Emmanuel Emega, who will leave Strasbourg to join Chelsea this summer, and has already shown that he is capable of forming a smooth relationship with centre-forwards.

Despite making a few Premier League appearances for the Seagulls in 2023/24, it was clear that the teenager needed to hone his skillset elsewhere. Still, he performed well enough to suggest he could become a Premier League star on the south coast and could realize that goal at Chelsea.

Chelsea have no European football to look forward to, but it is inevitable that a few superstars like Fernandes will push for a summer move, giving them a clean slate and allowing Alonso to work together to build a unified team striving towards the same goals.

Regardless, Barco’s performances in Ligue 1 this year show he has the potential to rival Fernandes, who is four years older.

Obviously, we are not claiming that Barco is a more complete midfielder than Fernandes at this point. The Argentine star is one of the best players in the business, but is largely underrated for his talismanic world-class level at Stamford Bridge.

But you can certainly see why BlueCo went over the line to get this contract, a player with the natural creativity and combativeness that talent scout Jacek Kulig described as “pure quality” on the ball.

Barco is actually more athletic than his big-money compatriot, a safer defender and has more grace and intelligence to his game, which Alonso will be pleased with.
